Pre Prohibition Beer Bottle Huebner Brewery, Toledo Ohio
Stamped: PURE WITHOUT DRUGS OR POISON in excellent condition.
Some History:When I acquired this antique beer bottle, originating from the Huebner-Toledo Breweries Company once located at Hamilton and Division Streets in Toledo,Ohio.
The age of the bottle falls in a small time window. Huebner Toledo Breweries Co. wasn't around under that name that long, launching in 1904 when Huebner Brewing Co., Ltd., (which itself had formed when John Huebner had purchased the former The Toledo Brewing and Malting Co. located on that spot), merged with a number of other smaller breweries.
All of the above mentioned changes with Huebner happened between 1896 and 1904.
The history here is certainly interesting, but not odd. Now what struck me as odd was the embossing at the bottom of the bottle.
My first thought was that was stating the obvious. My second thought was what an odd thing to emboss on a bottle. Why?
Previously  mentioned Huebner-Toledo Breweries Co. had a limited run as a name, from 1904 until 1919, fifteen years, when the anti-alcohol Prohibition movement got its way and the company could no longer draw sales through making beer. What does that have to do with the embossing? Think about what life was like for a brewer between 1904 and 1919.
    The Prohibition movement,
which took much of its strength from another Ohio connection the Anti-Saloon League which was founded in Oberlin, Ohio in 1893, was not a movement looking for compromises with the alcoholic beverages community.
Prohibitions wanted alcohol, well, prohibited , banned, and altogether removed from society, and they were vocal and passionate about their cause.
Now imagine the type of things Prohibitionists likely said or posted on their placards and signs during protests.
It was common to call beer and whiskey "poisons" and "drugs". The Anti-Saloon League launched in 1893, so the entire existence of Huebner-Toledo Breweries Co. was during the confrontational times of the anti-alcohol movement leading up to the 18th Amendment which banned booze.
It seems somewhat obvious the PURE WITHOUT DRUGS OR POISON label was a jab at the Prohibitionists, and actually a pretty funny one at that.
Many of the items that I sell are collectibles,
pre-owned and used, antique, vintage, retro to now. I carefully hand pick all items that I buy and sell, looking for quality and condition which I prefer to pass along to you. As with most things with age, condition flaws are at most time present.

If you are in need of additional information or pictures, please do not hesitate to contact me PRIOR to you placing a bid or finalizing a transaction on a Buy It Now. Customer satisfaction is very important to me.
I do not check the box that requires immediate payment, therefore; I will gladly combine shipping on multiple purchases that are made within a reasonable time frame. Just send me a message to let me know if you are interested in more than one item and which ones so I can be prepared for a combined shipping invoice.
